The awards are to help an intending student to take advantage of a course of study which
otherwise he or she would not be able to afford. Preference will be given to those whom the
vetting committee judge to be the most likely to benefit, and whose need appears to be the greatest.
Each bursary is intended to pay for a proportion of the applicant’s tuition fee and will be paid
directly to the academic institution and not to the student. Normally only one grant per annum will
be awarded in respect of any one institution, although three applications may be submitted by an
institution for consideration.
In order to qualify for an award, the intending student must be a national of, and resident in, the
continent of study, and accepted by the named institution for enrolment on a named academic
course of study which must be at undergraduate level, and which must normally be of between one
and three academic years’ duration.
An approved grant will be paid for the duration of the course, subject to a maximum of three
annual or stage payments, and subject to the student passing each year or stage of the course. If a
student fails to progress to the next year or stage of a course then the next year or stage grant will
not be paid until the student has remedied the failure to the satisfaction of the academic institution,
which will be required to certify eligibility to proceed.
Applications must be (a) made by the intending student on the approved form and submitted by the
applicant to the academic institution concerned and (b) received by the Secretary (see Home Page)
at least six months prior to the commencement of the course.
The value of any one year or stage grant will normally be five hundred pounds sterling, subject to a
maximum total of fifteen hundred pounds sterling for any one student.
